A little help!

Please, please can someone give this thirtysomething with an apparent deathwish some advice?

Got into riding a couple of years ago, simply to get fit & commute to & from work. Over the last 9 months or so though, I've taken my bargain basement xc bike out on the local trails & I've really got hooked on the whole off road thing.

Now, having mastered a few basic tricks, I feel the urge to have a go at a bit of trials riding, & to hit a few of the local jump spots too. I know my faithfull ( if now slightly battered ) bike won't be able to take the strain, so has anyone got any recommendations?

I'm looking for something I can throw over a few jumps & basically trash around on, but could still potentially be able to ride some single track on, not too lenghty distances though.

I know I'm probably gonna end up killing myself in the process, but having the right kit might help.

All suggestions greatfully accepted.

  • Up to about £500. Just moving house ( next Thursday actiually ), then off to Russia the week after, so hardly an ideal time to be looking. Thing is though, I could really do with something better than I've already got.

It's OK for going to work, or for a ride out with the girlfriend, but you can't really push it too much.

You could a balls out jump bike, but it would be limited for hammering normal trails: same for a trials bike, one trick ponies. I think the new breed of 'hardcore hardtails' may be worth consideration - these are beefed up, longer travel more relaxed xc/trail bikes that can handlemore punishment be still be ok for a long slog. Something along the lines of this:

  • Cheers for that  . Had a feeling I was gonna have to go down that path, but thought I'd put it to a wider audience to get a second opinion.

At 36 I'm pretty sure I'm too old for all this stuff, but I can't help but feeling I need to have a go as it just looks too much fun. :D

You are never too old! Try and test a few bikes if you can.
  • Looking at trying to get into a few local dealers to check out frame sizes etc. I'd rather try before I buy than order over the net.

Just hoping I don't bring too much dishonour or shame to the old 'uns with my attempted style of riding.

I agree with Supersonic - you might find yourself limited with a dedicated jump bike. A hardcore hardtail would be a good compromise - I'm building one myself.

    Be warned, this gets addictive.
  • Cheers for the advice chaps.

Been off it for around a month or so now, broke a wrist trying to defy gravity. Can't wait to get back out again. :D
