When I shift up there's no reassuring click so I find myself looking down to see if anything has happened. Not good :?

Anything I can do? They've done quite a few thousand miles, but I'd have expected many thousands of miles from a set.

Ta.

Swapping the cables, inner and outer might help.
When the cables are out of situ give all the visible moving parts a good squirt of penetrating oil and leave overnight before you re-assemble.

I replaced inners at the start of the summer, but think I'm still on the original outers (about 14 months). I'll try the penetrating oil trick when I change the cables then.

'Sticky' cables is a problem more on the downshift, when you rely on the spring tension in the mech to pull the released cable back - as the problem is with the upshift i.e. the ratchet engaging then I'd concentrate your efforts on the internals of your STI - it's proably down to dirt or gunked-up internals. A blast of WD40/GT85 is your only effective solution - sadly the internals are non-serviceable. Once you've applied a spray cleaner, you'll have to re-apply regularly as there's a risk you'll flush out any lube thats in there as well.
