We had this debate at work a while back. I was buying a bike for the same amount as a work colleague was spending on a car.....

    He thinks I'm mad!

but how much extra will he spend on MOT, service, maintenance etc, a £2000 car soon costs £4000 after a couple of years.

And last time I looked petrol/diesel wasn't free either.
  • I've been looking at new road bike prices lately and considering I haven't looked for a while I was pleasantly suprised :)

You can spend a lot more now if you want to but in 99/2000 I was spending close to £3000 for a high end bike and I'm not looking to spend a lot more than that on a much better bike now :)

I do less than a 1000 miles in my car and a lot more on my bikes so I spend my money accordingly :) ( except for my camper van  )

What gets me is that iff someone spends £3000 on fishing gear or a Hi-Fi the reaction is, "Wow, that must be quality kit", whereas when they learn your bike cost half of that they think you are nuts.

Couldn't have said it better myself Joe.

Same with Ping or Calloway (sp) golf clubs, green fees, annual golf club membership and on and on and on.

The majority of the population view cars as a status symbol, and regard cyclists as on the bottom rung of the ladder - "What is he/she doing on a bike, can't they afford a car ?"

It probably upsets their sense of position in society when they find out that a bike cost more than their Generic saloon car
  • Well my next bike will be worth more than the 2nd hand value of my car.

F8ck it the car works and is cheap to run.

I want to look good on the bike...........
  • What's a bike? Why is the technology needed to make a bike so expensive? They're still all made in Taiwain, no? Has costs changed much in the last few years?

Surely it's just simple economics - the reason they are expensive is because more people are cycling, so the price goes up.

    No?

Top end stuff often has a price premium to give it an air of exclusivity. I would bet the mark up on Colnagos and Pinarellos is comparatively high because both companies know they can sell every frame they make. The mass market manufacturers like Trek and Giant need to shift bikes in big numbers so I would doubt if they were making more than what would comercially be termed as fair profit.
