I'm after peoples opinions on the above two bikes. Anyone ride them? Have anything to say about them good or bad!

I'm upgrading my very old mountain bike, I'm commuting 10 miles per night home and need something faster and more lightweight. My bike at present is too heavy tyres too wide etc..

I've had a ride on the Ridgeback and it felt really nice to ride.

I'll need to add mudguards and poss have panniers.

Look forward to hearing your thoughts...

Many thanks
Alan

Looking at the specs the 501 looks a better bet than the 301 (if you can afford it).

As to whether the 501 is better than the Velocity for you - who knows. Both are reasonably well regarded.

You can read spec sheets, compare components, canvas opinions till you are blue in the face, but nothing beats sitting on the saddle and trying the thing out.

If you can try out a 501 in your size from an LBS, then try it out, and see how it compares with the Velocity you liked.

If none are available locally then that's your answer.

If the both ride similarly and are of similar spec then it comes down to whichever is better priced (as a package) and whichever LBS you want to develop a relationship with.

Both bikes I am sure you will be happy with, and both probably have different strengths and weaknesses.

Ive got a Velocity back in March and as you say it rides well. I was a bit disappointed with the quill stem at first it was a bit creaky it took a bit of grease and tightening. Apart from that its done nearly 2000 miles and Ive no other complaints. No idea about the Dawes though.
  • Thanks for the help so far.

It would appear that the Dawes is better equipt than the Ridgeback.

Although I'm no sure which is the heavier bike.

Does anyone have any views on the Claud Butler Urban 300???

    Thanks
    Alan
