Wearing Tights for XC

Im just after some opinions on what people think on wearing tights for XC.
I went for a local ride on sunday morning and it was pretty nippy so i decided to wear my Endura Knee Warmers. They do a good job of keeping me warm but they tend to become lose and fall down a bit which is really annoying having to stop and pull em up. They were ok last year and i dont think my legs have gone thinner.
Anyway, ive been thinking of buying some 3/4 or full lenght tights instead and wearing my singletrack short over them.
Im just wondering how many of you use the same combination and what tight you would recommend for xc winter riding thar arnt too expensive.
Cheers
Ian

I've just bought a pair of full length dhb's for the autumn / winter rides. Have'nt tried them on the bike yet... only at home and looked like a complete tw*t  Cost £35 at Wiggle, fit nice and feel OK with a reasonable pad.
Never mind ... if it keeps me warm.http://www.wiggle.co.uk/ProductDetail.aspx?Cat=cycle&ProdID=5360031772&N=dhb%20Merston%20Bib%20Tights0 -

1890.. wow they're antiques. Must have been early lycra0 -
MT 500's are excellent
If your not man enough for tights then get some Over trousers such as Endura Event0 -
Problem with tights is that if it's muddy and wet they take longer to dry than bare skin. I sometimes wish I could pluck up the fashion courage to wear them in the summer to protect against nasty nettle stings but my wife laughs at me to much!0
-
I read somewhere that if the temp is below 60-65 deg farenheit then you need to cover the knee when riding to keep it warm and prevent injury/damage
I admit tights look daft but I stick my baggies over the top, probably doesn't make me look any less stupid but in my head it does.0 -
Get some ron hill trackstars for a tenner at M and M sports, they aint skin tight,so you dont look QUITE as camp0
-
My Mrs says I look like Max Wall in my tights but I still like them better than shorts in the winter0
-
I know some old school roadies (70 years old plus) who wear prpoper women's tights under their lycra in the winter. Apparently, they keep you really warm. At least, that's what they say they wear them for...Music by me: Drum and bass http://www.myspace.com/johntechno

sounds iffy0

I wore tight styled leggings under my baggies last winter. Kept me toasty. This year I'd like to get some 3/4 length as full length are too hot unless you know the temp wont get above zero.0
-
I rode with my full length dhbs yesterday (not particularly cold but I've got a dodgy knee!) and they were fine. Not too hot either and very comforable to cycle in0
-
Anyone else here get the £10 ones from Aldi  :?:
I did , and they fit well and are remarkably comfortable.
I put my baggies over the top though...0 -
Thanks for all the input guys. Ive been toying between getting tights or some trousers but im swaying towards tights. Im not keen on the idea of having somethin baggy on the bottom half of my legs.
Ive just got to find some 3/4 length tights (dont want full length really) that arnt gonna cost me an arm and a leg.0 -
I wear endura 3/4 baggy shorts with the clip in lycra undershort thingys at the moment, when it gets really cold I will be wearing my full length endura trousers which are compatible with the lycra under shorts to, Below the knee I don't really feel the cold so the full length trousers will be good enough for me. I look a complete nob in both though LOL0

DHB Tights from wiggle look pretty good for the money.
Which one of these 2 would best suit autumn/winter/spring riding.

I would say the second pair as they have a double layer on the knee. Helps keep the joint warm in the cold.0
-
I'm in the same dilemma of what to buy.
At the mo i have lycra cycle short which i wear cammo knee lengh shorts over the top, but yesterday riding in the cold and damp my knees were getting cold.
I have i bib and brace type lycra outfit which i wear underneath but my wife refers to it as the gimp suit!
So i'm toying with the idea of longer tights and wear 3/4 trousers over the top or just lycra shorts with 3/4 lengh trousers over them.
But the ones in the link look good with the double layer in the knee.
Am i man enough to just wear the lycra trousers.....vain buggers us lot!0 -
I got the full length version of the above http://www.wiggle.co.uk/ProductDetail.aspx?Cat=cycle&ProdID=5360031772&N=dhb%20Merston%20Bib%20Tights. Must admit I have to wear them with shorts purely for vanity, humiliation reasons :oops:0
-
Ill defo be wearing my singletrack shorts over my lycra. No way could i just wear lycra.
CJW - What was the sizing like on your dhb tights? I normally have to buy 34 inch waist so what size would i need to order?
Thanks0 -
I'm 5'10.5", 34" Waist and got the medium and they fit fine. If you're any taller than me, they might be a bit tight length wise.0

That has been bounded about fishing circles (my other past time) for all eternity, it comes from when the newage hi-tech materials didn;t exist. There are far better alternatives nowadays.
If you don;t like wearing tights, how about 3/4 leght shorts like the Endura Humvee, unless it's proper brass monkies then I ain;t got a clue as to an alternative0 -
Im prob about 0.5" shorter than you cjw so medium prob would be my best bet.
Cheers0 -
lol
