Wierd bike problem

Turned up late for the chain gang last night and they were 200 metres up the road. Chasing the flashing LEDs I suddenly felt like I'd applied the brakes for 2 seconds -or like something was dragging on the tyre - anyway continued chasing and 30 seconds later same thing. Got off and span the both wheels, seemed free enough, brakes seemed OK, not rubbing. COuldn't find a problem and at this point a mate who was also late caught up so I got back on and kept chasing, I did tear off a reflective leg band just in case it was getting caught up in the chain but I can't think that was the problem. We never caught them - well apart from a few stragglers - and the bike seemed OK from then on for the 20 miles or so we had left. I've no idea what could cause this problem - hub siezing up maybe or something caught up on the brakes that came off between me feeling it and stopping the second time ? Anyone got any ideas - was I imagining it?

it's a hard life if you don't weaken.

Ideas: Lump on the tyre catching on the brakeblock. One brakeblock set closer than the other and catching when bike flexing underload.

Probably gunk or dog sh1t under the fork crown which worked free before you stopped.to check
