Which MTB headlights?

Hi,

It's getting dark just as I've got myself back into riding regularly, so I've deciede now its the time to get some lights to keep my legs going through the winter. Whatsmore, I reckon riding off road at night would be quite cool, if a tiny bit 'Blair Witch' perhaps!

I have about £200 to spend on some headlight(s) for XC singletrack. They need to,

* Provide a reasonable ammount of light for twisty trails (not DH speeds so I don't need "turns night into day", but something good enough for going through the trees)

* Provide atleast 2hrs run time, preferably more

* Be totally idiot proof, waterproof, crash proof, mud proof etc

* Be easy to mount (lights and battery pack). Having ridden motorbikes in the past I want to go with a bar mounted setup rather than a helmet light. Battery pack must be able to sit on a Sub 5 frame ok.

Besides that I'm not too worried. I'm not going to be doing all nighters, so I don't need huge run times. There's a few stone that needs to come off me before I worry about the bike, so the last gram of weight isn't critical.

Budget could be a little bit flexible, but I've also spoken to some people riding Ok off-road on much, much cheaper lights. They might just be better at spotting trees than me though.....

PS I'm going to be driving past LumiCycle tomorrow morning, so I'd be especially interested if anyone has any feedback on there stuff - might call in whilst I'm passing.

  • I'm a fan of Hope's stuff. I'm considering the Vision LED and the HID, but I don't think I can seriously part with £340 for a set of lights.
LED it is then. (It got a good revew in the recent mag tests).
Stem mounts are now available for manufacturers other than hope too.

the current mbr that is out now?

the hope LED light got a good review in what mountain bike £205 was the rrp. looks really nice too
  • Have a look at

    Lumicycle with a 20w and 12w.
    Niterider Minewt x 2
Exposure Joystick or (Enduro if you have deeper pockets)

If you only need 2 hours or so burn time, there is quite a lot of choice around this price point. There is a balance between performance and ease of use.Depends what your priorities are.

i just bought some light and motion solos for 150 quid. bloody brilliant, with the exception of the blind spot in fornt of you.

its the cheapest in the range i think but has a 6w, 10w and 13.5 watt setting, 2 hopurs run time on full power, but 14 hour charge.
I said hit the brakes not the tree!!

Well, I'm staying at a mates in Bournemouth at the moment and he's about 2 streets away from Lumicycle, so I think I'll go and take a look in a bit.

Don't suppose anyone knows what the diamater of the Supercross bars on a Sub 5 would be?
