clunking/clicking/ratcheting sound from bottom bracket area?

Morning all,

Noticed on my last few rides that there was a clicking noise coming from somewhere on the drivetrain. There was no evidence of it when I back pedalled.

This morning however, the noise appeared to be getting worse. Got it into the office and slowly back pedalled. There is a definite clunking noise coming from the bottom bracket area which clunks around 20 times per full crank rotation.

Any thoughts as to what the problem might be before I take it back (Only 4 weeks old and still under warranty). There is no play at all in the bottom bracket and the clunk is not transmitted to my feet when pedalling. Just noisy and annoying

Thanks
Phil

Dunno if there's anything in here that covers your problem, to be honest. Are your pedals on tight with well-greased threads?

Sounds like your bearings are buggered.
This post contains traces of nuts.

I had the same kind of symptoms, turned out the seatpost needed greasing... !!

If it's only 4weeks old get it back to the shop, let them deal with it....
  • What bike is it?

I've got a similar sounding noise on my Pearson. Sort of a clunking that is only apparent when pedalling. Am going to have it up on the stand tonight to see if I can work it out...

let me know if you have any luck!

  • I had convinced myself that it was the BB, so I slipped the chain off the front and spun the cranks to prove it. No clunking/clicking/noise whatsoever!!!

After removing the rear wheel to check there was no play on the cassette, I replaced rear wheel and tried again. It would appear that the noise is somewhere near the rear (but the sound is transmitting through the tubes to the BB area). I'm currently thinking it's just the noise of the chain moving through the derailleur cogs.

The bike is a Carrera Subway 2 (which I am very pleased with incidentally, although I wouldn't let Halfords staff anywhere near it!)
