Hi - I am more of a mountain biker and not usually concerned with weight as such, but I am about to replace the ISIS bottom bracket on my Trek 1200 commuter and was wondering is there any difference between those used on Mountain bikes and road bikes? There doesnt seem to be a different set for each on any of the big online bike shops that I can see.

Need a 68/108 sized one and was just going to go with the FSA Platinum ISIS Bottom Bracket one at £29.99

Any one anything to add on this?

just width. The mtb ones tend to be wider - 113mm usually

CRC has the Platinum for 25 posted

The Platinum is fine (for ISIS). SKF are the best but they're more money.

can I just ask how long it has lasted?

I had to replace the ISIS BB on my trek pilot 1.2 within 800 miles - a very wet coast to coast ride finished the poor bugger off.

I ended up changing the whole chainset for a shimano tiagra hollowtechII setup which was easier to fit, is a little lighter and looks great - ribble had it on offer at £34 + £15 for the BB cups - so £49 all in, but I got £18 back by selling the bontrager triple chainset (without BB) on ebay. (well it only had 800 miles on it)

I;m not saying that you should change the whole chainset, but ISIS do have a reputation as being quite prone to early failure - the bearings are tiny you see. so if you have done a few miles and the chainrings might need replacing soon anyway - well it might be worth a look..

I use an SKF Isis BB and have not had a problem with it - spins very smooth.

a mate had a platinum on his commuter and it lasted about 8 months, then snapped!

not too bad perhaps but not in the same league as other designs.

ISIS are generally regarded with utter disgust in the mtb world as they have been known to fall apart in less than a week.

Most mtbers now run either square taper or HT2.

    SKFs are the only exception.

    sorry will diagree with that.

most run with what ever was supplied.

if give the choice to replace most are now going for the external bearing type.

cant say than any are going back to Square taper.

good as it was it also had its own problems.

depends on how often they ride. If you ride a lot then you'll get pretty cheesed off with replacing an ISIS BB every few months at 30-40 a pop.

None of the blokes I ride with use isis anymore, for that very reason.
