My ruc-sack(SP?) has given up the ghost after 7 years of daily use. So I need a replacement. What should I get?

I was happy with my ruc-sack and I'm not convinced by courier bags; my girlfriend has one and the times that I have used it I haven't found it to be be especially comfortable.

Suggestions of good bags please :?:

    Budget, pretty open ended.

Size, not enormous but big enough to get my work clothes in, the Jansport bag which just died has a capacity of 30L and was more or less big enough.

    I'm really open to suggestions.

  • I like th crux range but they are lightweight mountaineering sacs really so may not be that durable on the commute

KIMM are also v lightweight, designed for mountain marathon, dead comfy but again not v durable and prob not that waterproof

I also like MacPacs which are built like tanks but not cheap

failing that any bog standard from Lowe / berghaus etc should suffice

I recently picked up a 25l Karrimor rucksack, with small pocket for water bladder, built-in rain cover, and that mesh system thing to help stop your back getting too sweaty for about £15 from Lillywhites. Big fan.

The only thing I don't want a bag to have is straps that do up around my waist as I find these a pain for cycling.

Can always cut it off if you see a nice bag that has a waist strap

I would second the KIMM, although you can't get them anymore. Look at OMM who bought out the company ( http://www.theomm.com/packs.html ). I have the 25L version and it is great. Recommend covering whatever you get with a waterproof hi-viz thing, e.g. Respro.
  • I've got a Deuter superbike, which IMO is a great rucksack, highly recommended!

    here it is:

I can wholeheartedly recommend The North Face Borealis...

It does have a waist strap but there's a clever little cut through in the back panel which allows you to tuck it away out of the way (I also don't use this when on the bike). I've ridden with it in some absolutely torrential rain situations and it's never let in a drop of water (plus I don't have mudguards so it acts as my spray protection). 30L so big enough for most loads you'll want to carry and also has a laptop divider inside which can be handy for carrying papers that you need to keep pristine etc (or even laptops, I'd imagine).

Mine's in custom 'red with brown speckle' - well, it was pretty wet on the ride home last night!
