yo ho guys (and gals). am upgrading ma rear mech to the new shiny XT shadow (am sure youve all seen it) and would like the short cage version. However, i dont know what ratios the mech can run with, as i run a single 36 tooth chain ring. My cassette is an 11 32 ( i think), would this run ok??? normally i would just bolt it on and hop for the best, but am being a bit clever by asking you guys...

cheers!!!

huh, just found your post, nicklouse. however when i work out my range, it comes out at a large(?) 59??? and that dont work... using http://cycle.shimano-eu.com/publish/con ... acity.html ... so am i doing it wrong??? as i only have one chainring, do i take the A+B value as 36, or as zero???

    32-11= your range.

as you only have one ring on the front.

i see. so the A+B (shimano webby) would come to zero, as i have no 'range' on the front. *epiphany*

  • you can set a short cage to run your cassette, but you have to watch the gear changes as the full range will not be available to you. For instance, on top ring, a short mech will not have enough range of motion to allow chain slack to be covered from smallest to largest on the cassette. By the time you change down from 27 to 23ish, you will need to drop to your middle ring up from to avoid putting the chain under so much tension you snap it, or worse still, blow the rest of your transmission !

Reading your post properly, there shout be no issues as you are running a single ring on the front !

I run a 44-32-22 upfront and an 11-32 rear with a short cage (its actually a medium cage) mech with absolutely no problems, i dont use the crossover gears and its all peachy.

With a single ring up front i cant envision u havin any problems running one.
