Hello, I need some help for I hope to upgrade from Vbrakes to disc brake (front only). I'm not sure exactly everything I will need to get. Will i need a new thing in the middle of the wheel (not sure what it is called) so i can put the disc on? Also will i need new forks all together or do the wire holders come with the brake? The brake is for my Giant STP 2 just incase there is any size problems. Also what brake should I get? My budget is up to £170. Thanks :D

well does the fork have disc mounts?

you will need a new hub or wheel if the hub is not disc ready and then if you are going for a hydro brake is your brake and gears seperate on the bar? Yes fine. no new shifter needed or use a Mechanical disk brake.

  • ok thanks alot mate! :D
  • ok I have had a look and thought of getting the Mavic Crossride UB Disc 08 or a Halo Combat Multi Wheel, Would these work? If they both work which would be better to buy?

The brake i was thinking of gettin would be An Avid Juicy 5. Would all this work??

What kind of riding are you (honestly) going to do and what fork do you have?

Something like this from CRC's wheel builder:

Shimano Deore Disc Front M525 Black 32h £0.00
    Mavic EN321 Disc 2007 32h Black £2.50
DT Swiss Spokes Champion Stainless PG Silver 2mm £0.00
Velox Rim Tape Cloth 19mm £2.00
Shimano Deore Disc Rear M525 Black 32h £0.00
    Mavic EN321 Disc 2007 32h Black £2.50
DT Swiss Spokes Champion Stainless PG Silver 2mm £0.00
Velox Rim Tape Cloth 19mm £2.00
    Selected Package Price £93.99

and a pair of these http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=22185 for £100 would give you decent wheels and brakes front and back for £194.

  • upgrade from Vbrakes to disc brake (front only).

Is this the complete "upgrade" ?

IMHO, I have found that that well set up V brakes (with the right pad material / good cables) are simply perfect. Yes, I do have an all action bike with discs / 4 pot calipers etc... better brakes than a moped from 10 years ago, but that's not the point.

If V brakes were "finished" you have to ask why Shimano decided to re-vamp the XTR range for '07 ? It's because they are much lighter than any disc set up and depending upon the terrain just as powerful. (unless you are a heavyweight perhaps)

They just don't look so cool when you are out with your chums. (or do they ?)

I have raced from one end of the country to the other on V brakes and find them reassuringly simple, reliable and apart from one epic climb on the Barton Hills 3 years ago, unphased by mud.

2 years ago, like you, I was tempted to upgrade to a front disc, but since my brakes are so powerful on my race bike, I decided to put the money towards fuel and entry fees to some more events and have fun instead

However, Good luck on your mission !
