Wire donkey isn't that new or special - for donkey's years, the term Drahtesel (wire donkey) has been a slang term in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Eiserne Ross (iron steed) is another slang expression used in these lands, though more by journalists for effect rather than cyclists. German-speaking cyclists usually refer to their Rad, which is an abbreviation though strictly translates just as 'wheel'.

I like the French slang term biclou, which roughly translates as 'two nails'.

Another French expression is bécane which is a derivative from a manufacturer of bikes and mopeds, so like we might say hoover for vacuum-cleaner.

How about this for an interesting fact:

Mexico is so mountainous that if it was flattened its surface area would be greater than Asia's!

The Polish word for bicycle is 'rover' after the Rover bicycle, due to these being the first bikes imported into Poland.
