Shipping bikes over from the USA

This may sound a really silly question, but has anybody ever ordered a bike from an American website and had it shipped over to the UK?
I've been looking at the Specialized Rockhopper and have realised that it is basically dollar for pound, meaning the bike is half price. Shipping plus taxes must mean that it comes in cheaper than buying from a UK shop.
Am I mad in thinking this or have others done it? If so which sites/ shops are good for buying with?

One thing to think of is where are you gonna take it when something goes pear shaped, unless that doesnt bother you.0
