I've got a bog-standard chain splitter - is there anything I need to know about using it on a 10-speed chain? It is a no-name brand which came with the bike (Giant SCR1), I don't think there are any joining links or similar

Don't think there is such a thing as a "no-name" 10 speed chain. It will either be an SRAM, Connex or KNC which normally come with a tool-free joining link, Shimano with a special pin, or Campag with a special link. Certainly none of them are designed to be joined the traditional way by pushing a standard pin back through a sideplate, since the tolerances are too fine.

Whilst a chain splitter is fine fo getting your chain to the right length, I'd recommend that you use a purpose made quick link for joining the chain rather than using the chain tool - most chains now have staked / peined ends such that when you split the chain, it enlarges the hole in the side plate - rejoining at the same place creates a sloppy fit with the pin. IME links from KMC or Connex are the most user friendly - SRAM you can only split once and can be a pain to split.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

I have had great advice from Monty Dog but wonder why you can only split a SRAM link once. I have split my chain more than once, though not often, with no adverse affects. Am I courting danger?

The rest of your chainset being Shimano, I guess that you have a Shimano chain. If it is Shimano, you need to use a reinforced connecting pin.
