What do I need to get for a single speed conversion?

Hi all,
I'm not sure where to start. I'm looking to buy an urban bike, but I've also got an old (but knackered), city bike sitting in the basement and I figured I might be able to make some use of it with a much lower budget than that of a new bike.
I'd like to strip it down, and convert it into a single speed commuter, but I've no idea where to start so I'll explain what I have and then perhaps somebody could suggest what I should buy at a low budget.
- Steel city bike frame with rigid fork and wheels in good condition.
- Brakes are crap so I will change them to V-brakes.
- The front sprocket is totally knackered. It's bent as is the chain and needs replacing.
- The rear sprockets (5 speed rear), need to go. They are more or less dead with a couple bent from the front bending incident. (Don't ask how it happened!!! )
- Need a new set of bars as well as a reasonable headset and stem bracket.
- Needs new pedals.
- New seat post and seat.
That's about it unless I've missed something.
So my question is, how would I go about converting the bike to a single speed
What cranks should I buy?
What rear single speed sprocket should I get?
What chain should I get?
Any advice is greatly appreciated!

just a note you may not need to replace the cranks as the rings can in most cases be replaced."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
