Hi I'm Albo,
I'm quite new to all this so sorry if i do something wrong or annoying although this is probably annoying you  sorry
> well, a few days ago i bought some brand-x handlebars http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... odelID=230 for my "mongoose tyax" and being the idiot that i am forgot to check sizes etc., so the handlebar diameter is too small for the original mongoose stem, does anyone have any help on which new stem i should get to accommodate my handlebar.
Any help would be much, much appreciated. Thank you

Any with a 31.8mm bar clamp. Plenty to be had.
However it does say that the bars have a shim, which you should be able to remove and use with your existing bars.0 -
But will i not need to check steerer tube diameter to know the new stem will fit with both steerer tube and handlebars?0

99% of stems are 1+1/8th inch - though do check.0

ok but how would i check that my steerer tube is either 1 inch or 1 1/8 inches
thanks so much for the help by the way0 -

err wrong.Heavy duty DH riser bar. With a 4mm thick wall, these bars will withstand alot of abuse. 22.2 mm diameter with a 25.4 mm shim. Extruded 6061 alloy, shot peened around the stem area to increase fatigue life. Suitable for DH and freeride.
ypur current stem is 31.8mm at the bar end.
you either need a new stem that is either 22.2mm or 25.4mm
or have a look for a 22.2mm to 31.8mm shim."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

don't get a new stem!
Send the handlbars you've got BACK to chainreaction (they're fine with refunds)
and instead order some oversize handlebars. e.g.
http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=16530
OR
http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... delID=3456
That way you don't downgrade from oversize bars to standard, and you don't spend any more money.0 -
I think I read that all wrong lol.0
