7 clicks = 8?
OK - I'm probably having a senior moment.
I have a set of Shimano bar end shifters from about 1993/4 in good working order - they came off a 7 speed and I want to use them on an 8 speed. I can't see a model number but assume they're the equivalent of Ultegra shifters; there are 7 clicks which should mean 8 positions right? - as 0 will line up with the first sprocket. Just need reassurance that I'm right before I send off for a new 8 speed cassette.
thanks

mtbers used to use this trick with thumbshifters, getting 8 clicks out of a 7spd shifter.
I've not tried it myself but there's a good chance it'll be okay/useable. 8 speed is essentially just a 7 speed cassette with an extra sprocket bolted on so the gaps are equivalent, although not identical - Sheldon lists the centre-to-centre spacing for 7spd as 5mm and 8spd as 4.8mm. That's a diference of 1.2mm over 6 gaps.
So you might need some tweaking, and new cables would be advisable.Facts are meaningless, you can use facts to prove anything that's remotely true! - Homer0 -
does sound like they are 8spd. and yes 8spd were ysed on 7spd with no probs you just had an unused position."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
