Changing Shimano brake inserts

Anyone got any tips for getting the old ones out? I always seem to end up having to hack them to bits with a knife to get them out.

    I've always just undone the little grub screw and slid them out. Did have to use a screw driver to start one off, but they've always come out in one piece.
