Chain Snap

I took my Orange Crush out on it's 2nd ride today and had a stretch of my ride along the canal towpath. Just as I knocked it down a gear to go up past a lock my chain snapped.
Looking at my bike my gear shift is showing 3 gears on the front and 9 on the rear. But the front only has 2 cogs and the rear 9.
I went straight to the lbs and they said that this was normal and gave me another chain.
Is that right?

99% of front shifters are triple shifters - the mech is adjusted so the 3rd shift is not used with double set ups. Perfectly normal and unrelated to your chain snapping. Just make sure the new one is joined correctly and the right length.0
