Im looking for some strong but light rims for XC Trail use, ive narrowed my choice down to Mavic XM 717's or XM 719's but what are the difference between the two and which one is the better one?

The 719 is a slighty wider, beefed up 717. One isnt better than the other, just different uses. Build quality of wheel most important.0

so would that be 17mm and 19mm supersonic? as i have always been confused by mavics nos.0

Yep, the last two digits are the internal width. XM stands for cross mountain, XC cross country. The XM719 is for slightly harder use.0

How good are the Mavic XM rims? Im thinking of going for a lighter build on my next rig and was also considering them. What are the alternatives on the market?0

The 317 are a bit flimsy for the intended usage, but the 719 has many very satisfied owners. DT 5 series would be a contender.0

I've had my XC717 (Merlin build) for well over a year and I've snapped one spoke and a slight dent in them. That was after a fair session of air time over last summer.0

719 rear and 717 front, would that better for a hardtail?
717 + lx splined hubs here from merlin, 900 miles on them, road-bad roads!/bridleways/grass/plowed fields (where's the trail gone!) nothing too heavy really, they look as true as they were the day they arrived though i do take care of them, no big jumps or failed hopped curbs yet.0 -

I'll be using 2.1-2.3" tyres over a year (wider when it drys up) but what is the widest a 717 can take?Learn on a Hardtail or be crap forever!0 -
