Dual chainring to triple?

I have an 07 marin Rocky Ridge which has a dual ring and a bashguard.
I'd really like to change it to a triple but not sure if I can just replace the bashguard with an outer ring and lengthen the chain,or whether I'd need a new shifter and front mech too?

I'm guessing I can just change the guard for a ring and lengthen the chain, but I'm not entirely sure and don't want to end up with a mess.
Looking from above it looks like the chainline might be a bit iffy by simply replacing the bashguard, which now has me wondering whether I need to replace the whole damn lot :?

Any advice appreciated before I go buying the wrong stuff or doing something i shouldn't.

straight replacement and chain change. mech will be fine and so should be the chainline.

  • I have a 07 Wolfridge and I to turned my nose up at the dual chain ring, much better to have three up front, did it no probs, feels good, drives well. Crack on kid... :)
  • I have a 07 Wolfridge, same set up, changed to three up front, rides well not bothered about bash guard and I ride some heafty trails that batter th s**t out of my rig.
  • Thanks lads,that's good to hear :D

  • Forgive my ignorance, but how can I remove the truvativ firex crankset?
Rather than replace the ring I'm going to replace the whole crankset as I'm not too keen on it.

It's one of these hollow axle new (ish) types with a bolt in the non driveside crank which screws into the axle, and another outer which simply screws into the crank itself (it seems pointless, like a cap or simply there for aesthetic value).
I've removed both bolts but the crank will not come off the axle, and there's no pinch bolts on the arm like shimano systems.
I thought that with the bolts removed the crank arm should simply slide off the axle, allowing me to remove the drive side, but it won't budge and there's nothing else to undo or remove.

I've had a search around the interwebby but haven't come up with anything, and an LBS isn't an option.
Once again, here's hoping for some advice :D
