Surely the obvious thing is to look at using the blood tests with odd results as an anti-doping measure. I guess that's why they're looking at blood passports.

    Pot, kettle, black.

    three, little, words.

    mcquaid, pat, calling.

    another, three, words.
  • Maybe, but it needs saying. At least the El Presidente is talking the talk. This is a seismic shift compared to his predecessor. It remains to be seen how far he himself follows through on his rhetoric of course, but he's boxing himself into a corner with this sort of thing - he can't very well accuse others of doing little and then chicken out of tough decisions himself. Testing times for Pat and the blazers at the UCI.

For example, stating that it was "too harsh" to ban someone for missing three out of competition drug tests, and then not bothering to notify the organisers of the Tour de France of these missing tests - just as an example of course. Not that there is any way that would happen especially as he is so hard on drugs and all that.

And now he's cussing out Bettini

Pat, is that the same pledge Vino, Kash, Sinkewitz, Mayo and Moreni signed?

  • Indeed. While wanting to support the UCI in addressing the doping issue, it's hard to believe they are actually capable of coming up with anything half sensible. As many predicted the 'pledge' is haunting him a bit now - it was a toothless PR stunt to begin with and Bettini has got him over a barrel as he didn't sign it and there isn't anything the UCI can do about it. Utterly pointless all round.

    Bettini's reaction from CyclingNews:
Bettini has reacted to McQuaid's comments saying that any attempt to prevent him from racing will only make him more determined to leave Germany on Sunday afternoon the same way he entered the country - with the World Championship jersey on his shoulders. "If they are doing this to destabilise me they should know that I'll win the world championship in Stuttgart on purpose," said Bettini

As if you could win it by accident!
