Hello,
very flat countryside where I live (essex innit). furthest off-road I go is flat(ish) fields and public footpaths.
Have a GT Avalance with v brakes at present. Like the bike but want to have something faster on road but can still go a bit rough.
Do I change wheels, etc or start again?

I think try buying some semi slick tyres and see how they work out for you, much cheaper than a whole new bike.
