Forks (again)

I need some buying advice on front forks.

I have just £100 to spend on an upgrade as I think the 100mm travel suntor XCR forks on my Giant Yukon are finished and I quite fancy an upgrade to something that doesn't feel like a pogo stick.

I ride XC with the odd small jump and drop here and there but nothing big.

I'm looking at the Rock Shox tora 302s and the Rock Shox Dart 3s which seem to have a similar spec.

I like the idea of the Dart 3s being lighter as my bike is quite heavy and it would be nice to shave off a bit of weight. The thing that seems to favor the TORAs is the IS mount and that when reading here everyone recommends them.

I will be getting all this done at my LBS as I don't think id be able to do a good job of fitting them due to my lack of tools and experience, id never cut the steerer straight in a million years. The price on the darts is £100 and i assume the tora will be about the same looking at the RRPs.

Which is the best choice? I am utterly stuck on this one. Also is there anything else at this price that i should be looking towards?

Thanks in advance

Merlin single malt fixie (Commuter/winter/training)
Trek superfly 7 (Summer XC)

  • Not much, maybe a few ounces perhaps half a pound here or there.

But that's not the point of changing them.

If you want lightweight you'll need to spend a lot more than £100.

The difference will be in the ride and the rebound damping, they will make the front end feel far more planted, and with the rebound damping being adjustable, you'll loose the pogo stick feeling straight away.

Less worry about what the forks are doing will translate into more confidence on the trail.

sorry for the bump but i have another question.

My LBS seems to have the tora 302 U-turn forks as the lowest tora model in stock so now im wondering if I should reconsider how I am going to do this upgrade, am i right in thinking my frame wouldn't really cope well with the adjustable travel?

the 302 is the middle tora andis good the adjustable travel is also good as you just set it at what you want and leave it.

awesome. One more question (i promise)

As I have a some credit with the LBS through giant as a warranty replacement for my current forks (they fill up with water...) I've decided to go for the tora 302 u-turn 85-130 with turnkey lockout. Thing is do I take it now or wait until the 08 is available?

will there be any difference between the 07 and 08s? All i can find is an 08 one on CRC which looks exactly the same as the one I saw in the magazine in the shop today down to the picture? anything i fond on-line seems to have the same description and i didn't find much on the rock shox website either, seems weird to me that nothing at all would change so I thought, being a newbie, id better ask before handing over my cash .

  • I'd buy the '07 myself. I'd be surprised if they'd changed them at all. They're well rated by everyone. I don't reckon you'll get more bang for your buck by waiting.

A friend who I ride regularly with has just bought the model you're on about, and he says they're great. He did upgrade from an RST Gila fork which was utter gash though. A pair of pogo sticks gaffer taped to the frame would have been better.
  • I'd either save up another £60 quid for Marzocchi MX pro's, or try to shop around for last years model. They're probably a bit heavier than the rockshox equivalents, but smoother and bombproof.

^^^ if you can get another £50 get them, massive reduction^^^
  • Just get the 07 ones from your LBS. stop messing and buy. they're great forks and you won't be missing out on much by getting newer or other makes.

ordered the 07 toras in the end as I'm at the limit of my current budget as it is and with the £40 discount I'm effectively getting these when id only get dart 3s otherwise.

TYVM for the info guys, helped massively calling this one as I was utterly stuck before :D
