In the good old days of the C+ forum i remember a thread about cleaning dirty handlebar tape and what you would use. Now i can't remember for the life of me what was said or advised.

Anyone help?

As I was cleaning my bike yesterday, I found in my garage a cleaning spray.

Sprayed it on the tape, and wiped it with a duster, the tape returned to it's original colour.

It's called stain slayer, I was amazed it worked so well.

If you have a look in the products section, it's there.

I don't know where you can get it from, however.

the thread on C+ referred to a kitchen cleaner of some sort - cif or flash or something like that - I remember thinking it sounded a bit harsh for the aluminum surrounding the bar tape - i.e. the whole bike!

now I'm not a fan of the 'muc-off' type of sprays as I think they are a little too much for area;s which should be oiled and defo a no-go for areas with bearings - however I do have a spray and use it if the bike is really filthy - and I find it works very well on bar tape - spray on and leave for a second then scrub with a sponge and rinse - even white bar tape can come up looking new with this method.

also - it's not really muc-off - it is some stuff sold in tesco for a fiver which smells and works just like muc-off.....
  • The first and last place to look for bike cleaning materials (other than for the chain) is baby wipes - I don't know what they put in them but the are simply amazing at cleaning everything from grease, dirt tar the lot

yes i know what you mean about baby wipes. I do usually use them for cleaning my bike anyway, i guess i never got round to trying to clean my bar tape with them. But I will now!! Thanks

I used to use a nylon nail brush and some washing up liquid - brings the cork ribbon up a treat. Always go with the direction of the tape though - not against it or you'll lift it.

Not thought to try baby wipes on it. Jeez - what do they put on those things ?!

Drop of white spirit on a rag works pretty well.
