my first ever majpr job on a bike

I have cross threaded the pedal thread so need to replace the crank and maybe BB

I have removed the bolts each side on the crank..whats the next step as neither side are budging

I've looked in a few books I have but I think this type of crank is
Here are pics of current stage:

Might as well treat it to some new rings and chain at the same time...

    you need a crank puller.

You could try the old trick of riding the bike until u feel it coming loose and wobbly, its worked for me in the past with the old style square taper cranks/bottom brackets.

That destroys the crank arms, and sometimes the bottom bracket too.

smckeown: They appear to be Octalink arms, so you'll need an ISIS crank puller. Best to buy ISIS ones anyway, as they work with square taper BBs, but square taper crank pullers do not work with ISIS/Octalink BBs.

Dont octalink cranks have a self removing thread or somethin like that on them?? My XT hollow tech cranks simply pull off when i undo the bolt with a 10mm allen key.

  • Hi all, latest update....

so i've bought a new crank/bb and all the tools I believe I need to remove and install a new crank.

my first problem is from reading the park tool site, is that the extract tool should thread all the way into the crank right ?

    crank_extract.jpg

Or do I have the wrong extract tool, this is what I have:

You had it in the first photo, however, you need to back off the stud that threads into the nut, so the larger nut inserts all the way into the crank arm. Once you've done that, wind in the stud in and start tightening with a spanner.

  • yeah worked that out, i also needed the larger screw insert. the hardesrt part was trying to visualise what the crank/bb connection looked like, as i've never done anything like this before. all made sense in the end

just been to the bikeshop to buy the shimano isi bb remover, so onto the next stage of getting the old bb off...

  • All sorted now, thanks to all for helping me with my first ever serious bike maintenance task 8)

The new BB is sooo much lighter than the old all metal one, and the bike only weighed 17lbs to begin with..superb!

  • it says "If spindle appears to catch and will not come out non-drive side cup, may be an indication that shell faces need machining"

Well the spindle went through fine without any significant pressure.

Still no idea what shell faces need machining means, what the hell are shell faces ?

left and right of the shell.

    thought this showed it well.

    or maybe this

    bbtap_3.jpg

but it may be that the frame was done before some time.
