10 speed chainset with 9 speed chain and cassette?

Hi,

Does anybody have any experience with running a 10speed chainset with a 9spd system, ie chain cassette and shifters.

Basically I am looking to upgrade my chainset from a truvativ touro to shimano 105 or ultegra 10speed. The 10spd chainsets seem to be better value plus have outboard bottom bracket cups, making it all stiffer and lighter.

As the rest of my set up is shimano 105 9spd, before I part with my cash I would like to know that 10speed will work just fine without having to upgrade the rest of my setup.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

cheers

Harry

  • Not Shimano , but I run a similar set up to the one you suggest : Campag 10sp chainset on an otherwise 9 speed set-up . No problems . If I'm correct then I think the chainset you use is immaterial as far as compatibility issues are concerned .

Agree with the above, no problems whatsoever.
  • Thanks for the responses. I think I am likely to go for an Ultegra triple as it is quite hilly out in the west country.

However CRC have some truvative rouleurs chainsets going for £20 cheaper. Does anyone have any experience with these? The only thing that puts me off is the availability of spares for them.

I take it that the the external bearing shells are not interchangeable between brands, eg shimano to truvativ. But are dura-ace and ultegra bb shells interchangeable.

pay the extra. The HT2 c/sets are superb.

    All Shimano cups are interchangeable

AFAIK the other brands will also work but I've not tested this myself.
