Tightening a spoke?

I've got one spoke which has come loose slightly.

Which way do I rotate the nipple to tighten the spoke? Clockwise or anticlockwise?

where are you looking at it from?

    Hub side.

I guessed it was just like a standard thread, but does screwing the nipple further into the rim tighten the spoke?

looking at it from the hub anti clockwise. the nipple is fitted from the outside on standard wheels and as it is screwed into (from the out side) it pulles on the spoke.

so to sum. when looking from the tyre to the hub clockwise and from the hub to the tyre anti-clockwise to increase spoke tension.

    I've tried it,

How do you stop the spoke twisting with the nipple? The twisting of the spoke springs the nipple back to it original position. I have bladed spokes.

Is there a trick I'm missing?

  • You need a bit of lube and some care; you don't want to snap your spoke!

there is a tool to hold the spoke.

BUT if the sopke is not turning has it reached the end of its thread? and the rim got a flat spot?

If the spoke has unscrewed too far remove the tyre, tube and rim tape. Use a screw diver to tighten the spoke from above then a spoke key to tighten from below.
