Old Raleigh Twenty

I'd like to ask two questions about my new old bicycle please?

I have acquired an old Raleigh Twenty. It has two oddities...

If I push the bicycle along the pavement, occasionally the free-wheel catches and the pedals turn round a bit. I've found the lubrication hole on the Sturmey Archer hub. Do I need to stick some oil into it, and if so what should I use?

When turning the pedals, there is a creaking sound. Is something on the way out, and is there something I can do about?

Thanks,

BW

http://www.sheldonbrown.com/sturmey-archer.html for all you need to know about the hub.

As for the creaking, can we have a little more information? Is the creaking only when out on the road, or on the workstand as well? Does it happen when turning the pedals backwards, or just when putting the chain under tension?

all the sturmey archer hub-geared bikes have always has the pedals turn when you push them along so nothing to worry about.
Incidentally my wife still has her Raleigh Shopper bike bought new in 1977 by her parents when she was 9 and it's still doing good service 30 years on.

  • Thanks for your replies. I think the bicycle's going to be as good as it ever will be. The creaking happens when I'm pedalling along, putting pressure on the pedals. I suspect that the bicycle's just a bit tired.

Yes, they're neat aren't they? I was going to try out a second-hand 3-speed bicycle, and then maybe buy a Giant 3-speed roadster if I liked the idea. Actually, I'm thinking that the Raleigh Shopper that I acquired has more charm. I'm going to keep it for a while yet.
