rear shock choice

If i were to choose a rear shock , Would I have to keep to my bike frames specified selection of shocks? The Cdale conventional Prophet range use shocks like manitou radiums, swingers and one example utilising a rockshox pearl .
Good shocks they are but they are just too low specced . Am I allowed to look elsewhere and what are the signficance of bushings? Can I use the same bushings on say a manitou swinger that was derived from a radium?

you will need a shock with the same i2i and the same stroke.
you will also need the correct fitting kit for that shock and your frame.
eg manitou fitting kits dont fit fox shocks etc..."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
