I need to get a chain device and think I'm gonna get this one:

I have heard it's no good without a top guide, could I just lock out my front mech and lower it down onto the ring more? would this work?

Try this, looks exactly the same as the Truvative Boxguide and I haven't lost my chain since getting that:

You could just use your front mech as you said though, that works but not as well.
Oh, and I have the mark 1 version of the DMR thing sat in the garage doing nothing
