Another one coming back to the tracks after 15yrs. How much weight does front suspension add to a mid-price bike? Are they an essential nowadays? Want to go three times a week.

They improve handling, comfort and control. Yo can ride without one... many do. Average fork for trails and XC wighs between 3.5 and 5.5 lbs.0

Essential...? Depends on what trails you are riding....
Some people make up a complete rigid bike as it's a 'very intouch' with the trail kind of ride. see: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=21640
Most bikes will come with susp. forks. Quality (and weight) will vary alot on the bike and £££.
Some will offer more adjustablity so you can tune the fork very well, others will be less tunable but still offer good damping, others will be pants!
Weight wise...again differs. My rockshox 454 air u-turns are around 4.7lbs (2113g). Where as a Fox Forx F80 RL is only 3.2lbs BUT they are very different forks.
Ask your LBS for advice on types of fork and their adjustments...0 -
so front suspension doesnt weigh much more, cheers0

Well, the weight penalty is overcome by the plushness and effect of the suspension...0

Well yes, rigids forks are typically 2 lbs or so.0

I think after 15 years you'll find bikes a lot lighter now anyway. I was in a similar position to you a few years ago and bought an old Orange P7 off a neighbour and was totally astounded by the difference a pair of suspension forks made - totally got me back into biking.Commencal Meta 5.5.1
