GOOD multipurpose tyres?!

easy all, looking for a good set of tyres with loads of grip that i can chuck down rooty trails but at the same time maybe do the odd commute/jumping off park benches/scaring dog walkers.
I was interested in the maxxis range until people said about taking them on roads (fatal) so are there any slightly harder compound tyres that are about and don't sacrifice grip?
