Play in the headset, how do I fix it?

Have got a new bike with an internal cartridge on the headset. Being new to mountain biking I'm trying to get to know the bike as much as possible so that maintaining it is not so much of an issue.
I'm a bit concerned that when I apply the front disc brake fully when stationary and push the bike forward and back there is movement of the front end that doesnt feel right. With closer inspection it seems to be rocking slightly where the front forks meet the cartridge, there is visible movement there. Is it supposed to move there at all?
I've had it under a week and did not think to tighten this area of the bike myself, putting my trust in the bike shop. Have taken it out for a few decent rides but nothing too punishing. Just trying to find out if it is worth taking it in to the shop or trying to fix it myself, before I take it out again
