Cutting Carbon Sterrers
My new frame has just been delievered today. YAY! I've never built up a bike before and so I'm not sure if theres a specail technique in cutting the steerer (sp?). Do I need to brase it from the inside? What should I use to cut it? Hand Saw or Jig saw ect...
Cheers for Help Ed.

Measure twice, cut once should be your guiding principle.
A hacksaw should be fine as carbon fibre is easy to cut. Make sure you cut it in a well ventilated area and it may be worth wearing some kind of face mask to prevent inhalation of carbon dust.
Personally I'd leave a bit of extra length in the steerer until you're absolutely happy with the handlebar height. Once the steerer is cut you're stuck with it.0 -
Cheers!
I was mainly conceraned about cracking it, if I put the wrong pressure though it.0 -
The main recommendation I'd make is to cut inwards from all around the tube, rather than cutting across from one side so that you end up cutting out at the far side. Use a fine tooth hacksaw, and either use a cutting guide, or if you're very confident and careful use some insulation tape wrapped round the tube with a line marked on it - though if you're doing that, go very slowly to start with so you don't make a mistake.
Oh, and personally I reckon only measuring twice is a bit on the low side.0 -
Agree with all aracer ^ says.
Get a 32tpi blade. Fit the fork, put the stem & spacers on, measure it, mark it. Do it again. Check it. Get your mate to check it.
Take the fork off, check it again, Go cut.>^..^<0 -
use an old stem as a guide, for a 90 degree cut.
Cut slowly
