The Soles have got to go - Hydraulic Disc Brake Upgrade

The wife’s 07 FSR XC has Hayes soles and once this set of pads is worn out there going in the bin as I'm sick of constantly having to adjust them for one thing and another and she’s not impressed with the stopping power.

There seems to be loads of differing opinions on what to upgrade to when reading through old threads.

It was suggested by LBS to go for a 185 on the front and 160 on the rear, is this really necessary. How much is it worth spending and what the best make/model to go for?

Any recommendations greatly appreciated.

go for the diatec sports (halfords bikehut). cheapish 180 front 160 rear simple effective dual piston hydros.

  • i would normally agree with nick but on this one i have to disagree strongly. we used to stick the diatec disc's but they were a warranty nightmare. if it was pads/parts being hard to get a hold it was peaple just not likng them in the first place. we have also had a few halfords version of the diatec's in to be sorted in some way or form. i say say any thing else woould do just fine. sch as shimano/sram/hope/formula they are all good just pick a price point and which ever one you like the feel of buy them easy done.
sizing wise unless she weights less than a bag of shopping you might aswell get 180/160 rotors.

russ interesting as the pads are widly available from ebc and other people.

dont know of anyone having any probs out here with them other than a bust piston rod.

and the new ones seam nicer yes i am using some.

but as you know i do like my formulas but pricey.

    then net failure.

now seeing brasso buget then i have to say 160mm front and rearf formula Oros. personally the K24's

  • formulas i would agree on there. yeah ebc make pads for them. only problem is not many lbs in aberdeen/edinburgh/newcaslte readily stock them which means a special order is then placed which means a wait to get pads. if they got one of the bigger brands then this prob wouldn't occur. just because people haven't posted a problem about this or that it on the mighty bike radar it doesn't mean a there are no problems with said product or products. either way go for the formulas or my fave are the juicy's both are great and will stop you when you need to

russ having used 7's and oros lets just say i dont have the 7's now but have 2 sets of oro 24's and will be replacing the codes with the Ones.

does it hurt to keep a set of pads spare if they are hard to get?

yes i had probs with both rear master cylinders, manufactuering fault on the piston seal carrier. replaced under watenty and a bleed kit. (i did them myself)

brakes still worked but the lever was slow.

The Shimano ones seem quite safe and good value, '06 XTR from merlin, full set for £149.99 or 07 ones (which come with rotors) for £199.99?

Saying that I'm sure lots will argue that the Deore ones stop just as well :)
  • sorry to offend you but i am not arguing with you over diatecs brakes i am just stating a fact we had problems when we used to stock them end of.
tell every lbs in the stated towns to stock those pads. sorry but i am just one man.
i never said formulas were bad either they are great for the money. oh yeah i have two pairs of juicy's as do most of the staff in all our branhes, so what my point? any brake will be better then the hayes soles he is having probs we.

brasso feel all versions you like on new bikes and decide from there.

Thanks for all the good advice, It's something to have a look round for next weekend as we up with the folks so no riding  .

The oro's do look a good buy and I've not seen a bad word said about them on the posts I've read.

We are going over in the states in november so I might see if I can get what the wife ends up choosing when we're there.

  • I had the exact same bike and the exact same problems with these brakes.
I Ended up going for Juicy 5's, 180/160. I got these off ebay from a german seller for £120 delivered for the pair, these were brand new.
