Winter's come early

Hi guys, I was wondering if you in the know could give me some pointers.

It wasn't too chilly but certainly dropped a few degrees in the last few days.

My windbreaker and a t-shirt is just right but any colder and/or rain and I'm stuffed.

I don't want to be spending loads and loads (I have seen the price of the highest rated jackets on th reviews here!!!), but I do need a jacket to see me through the winter that is waterproof but REALLY is breathable (not a super-fit guy and got hills, you know how it is).
Also flouro to save me wearing an extra thing over the top.
looking to spend sub £40 if possible

And my bril Altura gloves are having it so any recommendations to replace these would be ace too. (can't find them online now but are waterproof and never too hot, got em at a fair for £3 once)

Not sure about waterproof trouser covers as I got away with using walking ones if it rained last year.
Got a neckwarmer but swear like hell so a good jacket collar may be better.

Shoes, check.

anything else, apart from replace the bearing, pads and slap grease over the bike? ta muchly

  • Yep, its certainly colder - had a very wet ride in this morning (based West Yorks). I know you only want to spend £40 but I really recommend one of those expensive Assos winter tops. Although expensive they last forever and make a huge difference to your comfort. I go for the cheap stuff elsewhere but that's one extravagance that is truly worth every penny. You only need to wear a wicking long sleeve shirt underneath in even the coldest conditions.

Trousers - I'd get a pair of thermal cycling tights on the internet. Gloves - if the ones you have are fine stick with them - I use altura too and they are usually, but not always, warm enough. Have you got shoe covers?

Which Assos top are you referring to Moss? Have you got a link or a product name?

If you don't fancy the cycling tights, I can recommend the waterproof walking trousers from Trespass for about £20 - they pack away into a tiny stuff bag, have zips almost up to the hip for easy on-and-off, keep me perfectly dry and are breathable enough that I've never noticed any particular sweatiness. When I bought them I was a bit worried about the cuffs catching on the cranks but I've not had any problems yet.

I'd also second the overshoes. I use a cheapy pair from Decathlon, they make a huge difference.
Even if the voices aren't real, they have some very good ideas.

Decathlon, if you have one locally, they do some really good cycling tops, esp. winter ones - I have a fair bit of their stuff and it's all top quality !!!

I am still feeling the chill from Tuesday or Wednesday, just stuck my waterproof and a t-shirts on. I have had shivers ever since. I keep looking for the Aldi stuff, something warm and thin for the body would be good.

  • Cheers.
I just got the Alsi newsletter and will be having a look.
My only concern is that the jacket and gloves may well be waterproof but are unlikley to be hi-tech enough to stop me from getting soaked from my own sweat!
Tell me if I'm wrong and it's actually good stuff.

Yes, I'll get overshoes from there though

I've just gathered a bunch of stuff together on the Wiggle checkout, Endura hi vis jackets for £40, decent winter gloves for about 20-25.
That Asso stuff looks rather posh and wouldn't be to my taste!, the nearst to lyrca I'll wear are the ronhill trackys!
I have a set of them for when my velcro-sided DH trousers get too drafty!

Since I have flat pedals, I plan to continue using my splah-proof trainers with overshoes as above. or regatta waterproof shoes if its that bad...

My gloves are ace but can't find any Altura ones like em and I can't find teh model name/number on them. The stitching is really coming off everywhere and they do stink after a few years!

I wrote this up when it was coming into our Winter down here in Australia. Lots of cheap options too.

My number one vote, however, is for merino base layer. Make a HUGE difference, not matter what you wear it under. Warm, but not overly warm, and it wicks and doesn't stink up either (if you wear them for a few days).

I'll second the merino base layer. I got a Cragg Hoppers one for £20 and it's so warm.

Although it has got a faint hint of sheep about it, even after a few washes.

    Baaagain for the money though.
