Have just bought a pair of rockshox revelation 409's to replace my Axel comps.

1. What is involved with swapping them over?

2. Should u grease the steerer tube?

3. I see the 2 forks have different disc caliper mounts. What do i need to adapt the Magura Julies that i have? what part do people recomend?

Cheers

cut steerer to correct length. fit star nut, swap crown race over. find correct adaptor for your brake and disc.

    read park tools.
    read the disc brake sticky

good luck with that one  hate those star shaped swines!
  • would fitting a Hope head doctor make life a little easier than a new star nut?

    yes and no.

hed doctors are a pain in the butt. and also do not fit all steerers.

After fitting the last star nut myself I think I'd just take it into a bike shop for that part now, it should take them 2 mins to knock it in. Getting the thing in straight I strangely found nigh on impossible, I ended up getting it in on an angle then knocking the other side down to straighten it.

When cutting down the steerer be generous, don't cut it to the minimum required, it's better to go over than under (it also ups the resale value of the forks if you ever part with them).

The other stages of fitting a fork are very easy, the bottom race of the headset on your old forks might be a bit stuck to the old forks crown, if so use a knife/screwdriver to pry it off.

I think I just have a psychological thing against star nuts after the last one, I quite fancy some Reba SLs now on my FSR XC so I might have to face my fears some time in a couple of months.
  • thanks all. Im fitting these revelations to a Spec FSR XC. Hoping the rise in angle wont affect the handling too much!

Ah, I fitted the same to an old Enduro 2001 and stuck a long travel kit on the back to balance it (5" both ends). Sadly I think it was a bit wasted, the fork was amazing but I ended up feeling a bit too high and ended up going slower, I flogged the bike and went for this which is a bit more sensible. I'm sticking to short travel on my FSR XC I think, you can't really go wrong with U-Turn though.

Shame about the Tora 302 SLs, they seem to be rated quite highly but I've never had any smooth movement out of them. I'm 6'6" so had the preload set quite high, they felt fine on smaller bits but I've NEVER had more than about 50mm out of them on the trail going by the dust marks on the stanchions, lowering the preload takes them up to about 70mm but they sit a bit to far through their sag.

Just out of interest do you know how much they weigh if you've removed yours? ;)
  • Ive got the 2005 FSR so have got the really aufull Axel Comps. Im going to remove them tonight. I think they cpme in at over 5 lbs so should take at least a pound off the overall wieght of the bike.
Went to Glentress a few weekends ago and now the axel comps have completely siezed. Good excuse as any for something new!

I thought the Hope head doctors and the like were meant to be much easier to fit than star nuts..

you have sorted out your brake mounts?

hed docs are easier to fit if you can fit them and read the fitting info.

    but people never do.

  • I fitted a head doctor on my last bike and it was far easier than potching with a star fangled.
Once you've read the instructions it's simple to fit and when I change my current vanillas I'll be fitting another head doctor rather than try and get a star nut in there.

In terms of Hope hed doctors - the one fitted on my bike (by my LBS) and the one on my mates bike (which I'm fairly sure was fitted by another LBS) both came loose after about 3 months. When I had my bike looked at in Scotland by the bike shop at GLentress they replaced it with a star nut and said the Hope hed doctors often go wrong!
Comments on this - were they both fitted badly?
  • Hmm couldn't really comment on that.
I had mine in for around 2 years and had no trouble, but because I'm always cleaning and fettling it was constantly in and out, being retightened rather than just left alone where it could possibly work loose over time.

They bolt straight onto the back of the fork leg. Different fitting from the Rockshox

if the caliper bolts directly to the manitous then the disc can not be 180mm.

as i have said get pics later.
