Grease gear cable outers?

A mate's bike is having trouble with shifting/chain jumping when in the smaller cogs at the back so I figure I may as well strip and clean his gear cables. I'm not sure if you're supposed to put grease in the outers though, I never thought so but notice the XT/XTR cable sets mention pre-greased outers.
Current plan is just to run some degreaser then soapy water through the outers followed by GT85 to flush out the water, then a few drops of a dry lube in them. After wipe-cleaning the inner wire and putting some dry lube on it I'll then just refit it all. Does that make sense or should I pack the outers with something like lithium grease?

dont bother with the soapy water
if they are that bad replace them.
some should be greased others should not be.

Ah cool, they're original on an '07 GT Avalanche 1.0, he's only had it a few months and not ridden it much so not planning to replace anything (unless I spot some damage/lots of rust).0
