I need to change the HD in my laptop before it expires completely. My plan was to stick it in my desktop using a 3.5">2.5" adapter cables, create a disk image using acronis which I already have, then put the image on a new drive.

Will this work? Would the new drive need formatting first?

should be ok... try it without formatting it... if it fails format and try again

I suspect you'll need to format it first... I'm not sure as I don't know about acronis (it should tell you??)

Thanks guys...struggling to find any info on jumper settings at the mo. Current drive is a Toshiba....can't find anything at all on their site. I have a seagate coming to replace it and they only have desktop drive settings on their site :roll:

the new drive will probably need formatting, ive never used acronis but it will probably have a setting like - format and place image or something along those lines.

even with a new hard drive i would recommend formatting first
