What happened to bike shops?

I went round 6 bike shops in Bristol looking to buy a £600 mountain bike. Some only had 5 mountain bikes. I could order but i can do that myself. With bikes you want to sit on them first. Are there any bike shops which still hold large stocks of bikes in the South West or Wales? Or do i go direct to manufacturer?

Hmm which ones did you go in? ZeroG and Dave Bater seemed to have fairly decent ranges in, the new Evans also had a fair few. If you mean only 5 of a certain frame size/type then not really sure you can expect more else they'd need warehouse style premises. Now might also be a weird time as they try and clear out 2007 stock and might still be waiting on the full range of 2008's.
Have you narrowed your choice down already or just want to try as wide a range of bikes as possible? Most of the bike shops tend to stock only a few manufacturers (and I think also may have exclusivity agreements so might limit what rival LBSs can stock).0 -
Cheers, went to evans, didnt know it was there, very good. They had a few on sale do you think they will make further reductions when they get their 08 stock. I know about zero g, was going tomorrow. Thanks.0

Not really sure on Evans how much influence on prices an individual store has, independent LBSs would probably be prepared to discount a bit more to clear out old stock, I wouldn't expect a huge amount off though if they've already discounted.0
