I had an awesome idea this morning... (Cycling related)

Whilst i was commuting on my bike this morning, i looked down at my computer/gps thingies and took my eyes off the road. Why isnt there a cycling glasses link up with the computer (could use the flightdeck controls) that displays data as a heads up display on the inside of sunglasses?

I think this would be a quality invention that could possibly save lives

Because no-one would pay that much for the sake of a couple more seconds of eyes on the road.

How easy is it to make something that can be easily focused on 1" away from your eyes, without making the rest of the world so out of focus you might as well be looking at your handlebars?
  • While on holiday in Derbyshire earlier this year I was flicking through the tourism leaflets and came across one which said 'Owl and Otter Sanctuary...you won't believe the animals we've got!'

well - that would be owl and otters wouldn't it?

BRS - it would be as if it was being projected 10ft in front of you.

I heard a talk earlier this year from a futurologist, who said that we'd all be wearing these glasses in a 5 years, in 15 we would have them directly implanted into our brains. Apparently the opportunities are endless, you can look at a shop and you immediately see what it sells, user ratings, special offers and where you can get things cheaper. As everyone is using this technology your glasses communicate with everyone else’s and let make them see the image of you that you want them to see. If you don't like the view, your glasses will project a nicer one. When cycling you won't just see your speed without looking down, but your exact position, which cars, etc. are coming round the next corner, you can even have a virtual training partner that only you can see.

I suggested to him that the incidence of people bumping into things would go up in 5 years time. His argument was that the human brain is more plastic than we think, and that it is those who are currently under 9 who will be the first users. I guess they spend so much time staring at the TV or a PSP that it will be only a small step for them.
  • ok - apologies for the above vastly off topic post - somehow managed to put it in the wrong thread...

that's what you get for trying to browse a forum at work while doing three other things at once!

on topic - how long before someone figures out a way to push advertising bumf through the video feed to the glasses...

Yeah you're quite right, there's not a cyclist out there who would spend a stupid amount of money on a useless piece of 'latest technology'.

I was playing around with those of technology about 10 years ago - it's perfectly feasible using a half-silvered mirror to project a virtual image focused about 1m in front of you - the downside is the price - the optics are fairly clever and expensive. This sort of stuff is being developed for military use and I expect will be relatively cheap once into full-scale production - US technology licenses allowing.

Given that we had a Viz top tips thread a fortnight ago, here's my combination of the two:

Save money on expensive head-up displays. Simply hang your bike computer 18" in front of your head using a stick poked into your crash helmet.

what would stop this seeing through mens and your families? the glasses would have to process and filter out the wrong images (which would make them so darn smart) but this leads to a lag so what your seeing isn't live. or it identifies these people and auto filters them out.

If i could see into/through womens clothes I wouldn't have any time left to look at men and my family!!!

More on topic - i managed to see on my cycle computer that I was doing 83kph heading down towards Leek up in the Peak District last week, if I can do that without killing myself i don't see the need to have the information piped into my glasses. Having said that, i was tucked down so low my face was only about 3 inches from the cycle computer anyway!

Beer goggles actually do exist. I knew a nurse who had a pair that she used to demonstrate what being drunk is like to schoolchildren. I reckon that they're around the 6 pint mark.

I ditched my computer altogether and I'm now much faster (I like to think)! :D

Seriously though, it's suprising how I just don't miss it. I mean, you don't really need it anyway.
