SRAM vs Shimano cassettes

I am after a cassette for my XTR M975/DT 4.2 wheelset

I was going to go Shimano XTR but they are £80.00

I now have started to look at the SRAM Red PG-990 with PC-991 chain, Merlin are doing the set for £49.99 or something.

Now these are SRAMs 'top of the line' models so should be pretty good

Any of you use these? I'd love to go Full XTR but that £30 could be used on something else and not sure if it's worth it for a few grammes....

The rest of the kit on my bike is pretty light so should balance out.....

:?

I havent used XTR or PG990. But I have use XT and the PG980 cassettes. Couldn't tell the difference.

I'd save the money and go for XT or 980, they are only going to wear out.

  • Sram PG990 has performed flawlessly for me for the past 3 months. Really slick shifting with a Sram rear mech.

Oh and it looks bling with the red bits which is whats important right!

Like Chris, I'd also go with the XT. Unless you are really needing to shave the grams then the XTR isn't worth the dosh. You get a decent carrier on the XT and its pretty light. Thats all you really need from it.

You've seen his Marin, XT isn't what he's looking for

he should look at a Tune cassette.

been running XT fro years with no probs at all. just started seeing what the Sram are like. and have an XTR waiting to see what it is like.

PG990 is not as lite as XTr as it doesnt use Titanium cogs. I have read that the PG990 suffers from a short life span as the cogs wear quickly. - hoping that it not the case as I have recently purchased one.

SHifts nicely with XTr deraileurs and chain.
  • I was just looking on the Merlin website and you can get 2 XT cassettes for the price of one XTR! Will an XTR last twice as long as an XT one?

I'll give you that one, Nick:

The Tune cassettes are gorgeous (if a cassette can be gorgeous). Get it Ti Nitrided for extra coolness! They are something like 180g as well which is just silly light.

  • very nice but have you seen how much they cost!!!
  • ...and I thought XTR was expensive!
  • I've run a SRAM cassette for a while with no noticable difference from a Shimano one. Just bought another one as Merlin cycles do a pretty good chain & cassette offer and there was no way I was gonna use a Shimano chain!

    Fluff
  • ordered the SRAM set from Merlin (PG990 cassette and PC991 hollowpin chain) for £50

Wish I hadn't looked on poshbike now though - thoroughly depressed... tune stuff.. mmmmm!

I looooove those Storck frames - how nice are they???

    Thanks for all the replies!!!
