Hi,

Have just ordered an Orange Crush Hardtail. I managed to get a really good price on it.

My main problem is it will have to be kept outdoors a majority of the time. That leaves me with some problems.

Which lock would be best for my purchase? I am also going to work as it is a good few miles over some trails!

And is there a rain cover that is recommended?

Many Thanks,

Robin

are you going to insure it?

if yes then whatever the insurance company asks for.

  • Thanks for the quick answers.

So it is worth speaking to the insurance company and getting one of their suggested locks?

What type of locks would be best for transporting? Something light enough but durable.

No decent locks are light - about 2kgs seems about minimum for realistic levels of protection. In a recent C+ test, Kryptonite's New York Fahgettaboudit Mini and the Abus Granit X Plus 54 23cm D Lock resisted 5 minutes attack with hand tools and a couple of minutes with power tools - personally I wouldn't settle for less than this.

The Abus is 1450g which is lighter because it has a thinner (13mm) shackle (which would normally be too thin) but the clever design means it requires 2 cuts to break; whereas the Kryptonite has an 18mm shackle and weighs narer 2kg, and has £2500 theft guarantee.
  • You can't get much better than these. Not the cheapest or lightest, but how much is your bike worth to you?

  • That looks like some serious kit! Will have to make sure the Mrs doesn't find out :P

why transport the lock if it is for work?

one locked to locking place at work and one for securing the bike at home.

but again read the small print from the insurance company.

  • Because I will be going to and from places lots and my home when I move may not be in the best place.
