Crunchy freewheel

After 55 miles in the pissing rain yesterday my rear wheel is making a crunchy noise when freewheeling. Rotating the cranks backwards at standstill also makes the noise so I reckon it's the freewheel. It's pretty new so the bearings shouldn't be shot, but I'm thinking about taking it apart and giving it a clean.

1. Can mud get inside these things and crunch them up? I thought they were supposed to be sealed against the elements.

2. I've never taken a freewheel apart. I've checked out Park Tools and it looks fairly simple but are there any pitfalls I should watch out for?

3. I sprayed a little bit of Muc-Off on my cassette before the ride, left it for a couple of minutes and rinsed it off before re-lubing. Could this have jiggered (dissolved the lube inside) the freewheel?

Cheers for any input!

    what hub?
"Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
    Parktools :?:SheldonBrown
  • Sorry, the hub is listed as 'Joy Tech disc compatible alloy cassette sealed mech'. The freewheel is listed as 'SR/Suntour PF-41 11-32t 8sp'.

unlikely that it will be a freewheel.

it will be aq freehub (body) and a cassette.

Sorry cheap and cheerful hub you could well have killed the freehub. New on not really serviceable.

have a look on both ot park and sheldons webbys below for more info.

  • Ah, cheers Nick. I knew I'd get through the cheapie parts on my Tyax but didn't think they'd go this quickly! D'you reckon the Muc-Off killed it then?
