Cycle Insurance?

Hi,
Was wondering if anyone can give me any information or an "estimate" quote as to what they would expect me to pay insurance on a bike?
Im looking at a new bke.. £1600 right now (On sale, was £2100).
Would like insurance to cover theft, accidental damage (including a crash resulting in say a cracked frame), and (if possible.. is it?) Liability insurance should I wipe someone or something out? (E.g. costs covered should I hit a car) In a word basically Fully Comp
If anyone can give me information as to what they would expect me to pay for an insurance deal with this included?
Bike would be stored in back yard, and in a morrisons carpark 8 hours a day 5 days a week. Would be Locked up of course.
Thanks on advance to any replies

I have my insurance with Cycle Guard, I think I'm paying £179 for a £2000 bike cover (including racing and roadside rescue but not public liability). Not very cheap and it's hard to argue against people that just use M&S home insurance.
If you do go with a specific bike insurer though be vary careful to read the terms and conditions, especially about where the bike is kept and what it's locked with as they're pretty strict. I had either the choice of changing my garage door locks or getting a ground anchor + chain, went with the anchor + chain for £150 in the end.

You could also try "E and L" - they are quite good.
Again, you need to make sure you have one of the insurer's approved locks or your policy won't be worth spit should you make a claim for theft.
What do I ride? Now that's an Enigma!0 -
I would recommend joining either the CTC or British Cycling. That gets you 3rd party liability cover + acess to legal help should some idiot knock you off. You also get a bi-monthly mag with CTC.
I ended up going with M&S home contents cover as the quotes for specfic insurance were huge. M&S covers un-specified items up to £4000. Not sure it it cover me if I crash the bike when out though.0 -
Interesting replies.
I presume (never really done insurance before so new to it like) £179... is that per year or month etc?
If im about to pay out £1600 for a new bike, im pretty sure I wont be too fussed about getting a lock to match their specifications.
Would locking it outside morrisons to a big metal railing thats dug into the floor count as a ground anchor? lol.
I guess the easiest way would be to speak to some people (maybe at the bike shop) locally for advice? M&S sounds somewhat promising... but I've crashed before and ive crashed again. If i have a carbon frame next time... breaking it wouldn't exactly be pretty... probably sobering? loll
Thanks for the replies people Ill look into your suggestions0 -
Yeah I think the wording is a "permanent structure" but ofc the definition of that is a bit debatable, I'd have thought a big metal bike railing would suffice. The issue you might have is with partial theft like just the wheels as I don't think that's covered under CycleGuard if they weren't secured as well, which is a pain in my case as my chain doesn't go through both wheels let alone all the quick release/easy to remove bits.
I'd definetly take a closer look at M&S first (I kinda wish I had now, at the time though I'd just renewed my home contents and couldn't be bothered with the hassle of changing it).
The £179 is per year btw, they do online quotes on the site I linked originally to so just play about with the options you need.0 -
A £1500 bike will cost £11.25 a month if you live in London or the home counties and £9.65 if you live elsewhere. I can't see why it should be more expensive if you live in leafy Surrey rather than some backstreet in Liverpool :?
This is with E&L. I'm seriously considering it for my Cayo Expert. I keep hearing that carbon frames can break in a crash and then others say that they should be pretty tough. But who knows. £135 a year seems quite expensive but if you've got peace of mind then maybe its worth it.Beer, the reason my ambitions have not become my achievements0 -
I use these guys: http://www.eta.co.uk/pages/Services/26/default.htm They seem to be competitive, offer breakdown and have few rules and stipulations.0
