I have just looked out my winter bike in preparation for those dark miserable days coming in the next few months. It needs a few things done but i have noticed that there is a loud grinding noise coming from my 550 back wheel bearings. Is the wheel doomed or can it be fixed? Its booked into my LBS next week but it is a case of I want to know if there is any options before I go.

An easy fix. I believe Shimano use cup and cone bearings so it is most probably just a case of renewing cones or races.

a few new parts, or sometimes just a clean and a re-grease is all thats needed, which can easily be done yourself. I've done it in the past, nothing to loose except an hour of time if it doesn't work.

Use to do it all the time on the MTB when that had cup and cone bearings. Never needed any new bits, if it was done often.
