I am lucky enough to have Grizedale forest as a back garden. 8) I go running in it and have decided to join you lot and am cosidering recondition my old GT Arrowhead.

What is long / short travel and how would you catagories the GT Arrowhead.

I also want to get the bike sorted out with new brakes, gears etc.

Is this worth doing or should I save the hassle and mney and just spend my cash on a new bike. I weigh 94kg and amy 6ft 2inch if that helps.

I want to go out at least once every other day on the North Face trail so I suppose a tuff bike would be useful.

Where do I start? :?

    short travel long travel what?

    short travel XC bike?

    short travel All mountain bike?

    short travel DH bike?

    it is all relative.

but the shortest current forks are 80mm and resus about the same or 100mm

    re your bike it depends.

get an LBS to quote for what you want need doing and then look at what that would get you in a new bike.

GT arrowhead designed around a 80mm XC fork.
  • Which makes it short travel, same as my old Orange P7, which was okay to ride round the red route/North Face Route at Grizedale, however you could do it faster and more confidentally on a longer travel bike. Depends how much you want to spend, what are your budget limitations?

  • When we first moved ere I tried it on the north face and I must admit my arms took a real hammering as I dont have suspension forks.

I would like to spend about £800 put could stretch it to £1000 if I had some advice on the right bike for the nort face trail.

  • Well you could go for a tough hardtail with long front suspension like the current Orange P7 which would also be good on things like the Walna Scar Road (in fact it was fun on my short-travel P7 but a little scarey at times) or you can get some half-decent full-sus bikes now for £1000.
