There isnt any DH bikes in this price range. Maybe a couple of hardcore hardtails like the Saracen Mantra, but if you want a tru long travel tough hardtail you need to spend more.

and it's definitely not worth skimping, buying a 300-400 pound bike (which are almost always meant for xc) usually start braking up and rattling under such conditions as intense dh throws at it, save ure money till u can afford a proper setup from my experience!!
  • the bike only has to hadel 2-3 ft drops and mabey a few medium size jumps nothing to big
the bike i am riding now is a raeligh mr black alright frame just not so good components and i would be better buying a new bike for 300-400 because doing it up will cost round about that see my point.
  • Yeah trying looking in second hand market for Norco, Kona, Maybe Orange etc

Hardrock not the best bike either, its still an XC bike and has poor parts.

    This would handle drops better:

    or this:

Though I'd replace the fork in the latter. Best frame you'll find for this money though, and good strong components.
  • They both look pretty naff to be honest

Find me better for 400 quid new then... nowt wromg with the Ruckus - I have one, its a great bike.
  • you could always have a look at the 2008 giant stp3. it sells for £295. yeah it doesn't have the best of forks on it but the frame more than makes up for any shortcomings with anything else. as you break or as parts wear out it will have givng you time to save for better parts, ie forks.
the front end has a descent stetch for the odd climb but most importantly the back and is as short as you like. it can also except up to around 140-150mm fork without becoming to slack of an angle. also having a zero stack headtube it will still allow you to keep your bars low enough to still have your weight over the front end. this is where most other manufactures forget about. beware though having a such a short rear end could and has caught out many a novice and seasoned riders alike.
